Get the spring look: Dos and Don’ts

I’m so happy it’s spring. You know what that means? Bright colors, new hair, flowers. Those who fell into the winter and fall trance of matte dark lipsticks, dark colored eyeshadow and pale skin — fear no more, it’s time to get bold.

Please do:

  • Get out that bold red lipstick. Might as well pull out your pinks and corals  too. Sephora’s liquid lipstick has some of the brightest spring colors around.
  • Shop spring lines. Forever 21 and Kendall and Kylie’s line are affordable and bring out the latest and most stylish spring trends.
  • Try a new hair color. If you’re feeling bold enough, go blonde, pink, or even try grey like me!
  • Paint your nails. Use yellows, pastel pinks, whites, greys and coffee colored polishes. These are the most popular colors this spring.
  • Use bright colored eyeshadow. I’m not the only one who’s been not using certain colors on my palette. This spring is the perfect time to experiment with some brighter colors. Blue and gold have been popular bright colors, try them out. You’ll be shocked!
  • Moisturize. The weather’s getting warmer, make sure you have a good face lotion. Also, oil serums have been trending. I use Korres Rose Brightening oil serum to even and brighten my skin. I just mix it with my foundation and my face feels hydrated.
  • Hike, go for a walk. It’s the perfect weather to do so. Breathe in the freshest air of spring, it’s good for you!

Please Don’t:

  • Over do makeup. Yes, bright colors are in this spring, but if you use a bold lip color and eyeshadow and do heavy highlighter, that’s not as in. Try using a bold lip and light eye makeup or a bold eye and a nude rosey or mauve colored lipstick.
  • Spend all your time inside. Watch the flowers bloom, take a nap under the trees, make flower tattoos. Pinterest has some great spring activites and crafts, I’ll let you google “how to make flower tattoos” yourself, they’re sweet.

For your inner creativeness a Lip Gloss set Must-Have: Sephora + Pantone Universe Watercolors

If you’re a color person you’ll love this set! I will warn you: the colors are not as pigmented as they look in their bottles as it is a WATERCOLOR set (meaning the colors are light and watery — like the paints). I really like this set because I don’t wear a lot of crazy colors and because these colors are lighter than normal, it let’s me get away with it. The pigment and consistency is really great! It goes on well, nice and even. It’s quality gloss, people.

The blue is my personal favorite!
I really like this reddish pink one too. This would be more practical for an everyday look.

I was surprised by the orange. It actually looks great! Reminds me of a guava pink and very light orange color.

This one had me a little uneasy. I feel like it would look great on somebody, but not me! I could see someone doing a creative look with it though.
And this is the purple one. I was really impressed by this color, it’s actually really nice looking! Anyone could pull this off!
So you may have noticed that I did not include a picture of the yellow gloss. Well, it didn’t really work out because, well, it just was not feeling my lips and it’s not very pigmented.

3.9 out of 5

  • Great colors, goes on smooth
  • Creative idea
  • A little deceiving
  • It’s on sale now at Sephora and online!

Before you decide to color your hair, read this! Your hair depends on it!!

Coloring your hair at home. So many benefits, but it could also be damaging to your hair if you make a small mistake. Personally, I like to color my hair at home because I hate spending the salon money so I look for easy, foolproof ways to do it myself.

After years of coloring my hair back and forth between blonde, black, brown and even blue once, (yes, I colored the tips of my hair blue like Kylie Jenner) I have found ways to protect your hair and find that right color.

Protecting Your Hair:

  • Coconut oil! It’s always a yes and cheap. You can get coconut oil in its gel form or just regular oil. I really like buying it in gel form because I like melting it myself. So, all you’re going to do with your oil is apply just a small amount to your roots and ends and then comb through. If you do this a week or two every night before you apply color to your hair, it will be less likely for you to experience damage. Please do not learn this the hard way!
  • Avoid heat styling a couple weeks before you color. Hair that has already been broken is almost impossible to repair, don’t make it even more less likely by heat styling and putting color on back to back!
  • Have a hydrating, deep conditioner on hand. I really like Mane N’ Tail, Suave’s Humectant Conditioner and Not Your Mother’s Way to Grow. Use this after coloring and every day after that — FOREVER (:
  • Hair repair masks, even if your hair is not damaged or in need of repair. Putting any kind of color on your hair strips it of many nutrients and applying a mask after rinsing out color will make up for those lost nutrients. The best mask I have come across is Phyto’s Intense Hydrating Brilliance Mask. You can get masks that will do really well too at grocery stores or a beauty store or even make your own!

Choosing the right color and brand:

  • Before buying color, talk with a stylist or an accredited worker at a beauty store and ask about how you think a certain color would look on you — if it’s out of the norm like red, purple, green, blue, etc. Before I colored my tips blue, I talked with a hairstylist who told me that I would love it and that it was trending. When I asked about doing different colored tips, she told me my best bet would be blue. She was completely honest and sometimes another opinion besides your friends’ can be really helpful.
  • The basics: blonde, black and brown. These are the easiest colors to work with and almost fool proof. * If you bleached your hair and want to go back to brown, mix the brown color with a color base of red! If you don’t your hair will, I repeat: WILL turn green. I may or may not know this from experience.
  • Buying color from a grocery store/convenience store or wherever: Revlon’s Soft Black box color has always been my favorite. It’s literally $3 a box and their ColorStay conditioner that comes with it is so great for your hair. I have not used anything else because many will ruin curl patterns and damage hair more than they should because of more chemicals.
  • Make sure you get enough! One box usually is not enough, unless you have really really short hair!

If you’re brave enough to color your own hair at home, keep in mind how to keep your hair healthy in the process. Also, don’t be afraid to try a new color — even if it’s something crazy like bright fire truck red. If you are totally convinced that you love it, that is enough and it will look good. Do your research and compare shades of that color. Look online for people who have the same textured hair as you and see what they look like with the color you want! You’ll definitely be addicted after the first time. I love the feeling of looking slightly different.

Have you ever had a hair color catastrophe?

What color do you absolutely, low-key want to try?

A review: Tarte’s Tarteist Lipaint

Who else, besides me, is obsessed with liquid lipstick? Okay for me, it’s specifically matte, dark colors. OBSESSED. A couple months ago, I bought Kat Von D’s long-lasting lipstick in Lolita. It was my absolute favorite for a while, but then I needed a new color, but from the same general palette (Idk, I just really like dark purples, browns and nudes. I stay away from all the other colors!). I decided to try Tarte’s new line of liquid lipsticks.

So the lipsticks come in a really cute package. Tarte calls the lipstick “lip paint.” I was a little confused about what “lip paint” was and if I would even like it.

I really like the thin brush on the wand. It helps with precise lining which is really helpful. The consistency is also a lot like a matte liquid lipstick only it goes on really smooth! It takes a little while for it to completely dry, but the color is amazing.

I ordered the colors “tbt” and “manbun.” Tbt is my favorite because I can wear it a lot more often. It’s a nude pinkish color that gives me life. Manbun is a mix of a Vampy red and berry purple. It’s dark and I’m in love with the name and everything about it.

Here’s a quick swatch after a couple minutes of letting both colors dry.

Overall Impression:

  • Colors are vibrant, does not take a lot to fully cover lips
  • A little smaller than I would have expected for $20
  • Fun packaging and creative color names
  • Lasts the whole day
  • 4.5 out of 5

What’s your favorite lipstick? Do you tend to buy similar colors or do you like to diversify your lipstick color collection? I want to know, comment below!

Obsessions of 2015 — My can’t live withouts!

2015 was a great year! Here were some of my obsessions:

  1.   Matte Lipstick- Holy Cow. Dark brown matte lipsticks, nude matte lipsticks, dark purple matte lipsticks. One word: Amen. Not to mention Kylie Jenner’s new lipsticks that sold out seconds after they were released. Yeah I was one of those excited, loyal fans that was ready to click the “confirm my order,” exactly the time it came out, but sadly Kylie has too many fans who clicked that button half a second faster than I had.
  2.  Younique- This new brand of makeup has had me so obsessed. Some of the proceeds go to women who have experienced domestic violence and if you know someone who sells it (it’s kind of like Mary Kay only better for your skin!) they will receive some of the profit too! I think it’s just a great company. P.S. I’ll be releasing a review of the AMAZING Younique foundation and crazy cool mascara very soon! No harsh, unnecesary chemicals and less than 12 ingredients! It’s great for your skin!
  3.   Instant headache remover- I just recently found this nifty eye cover. Heat it up or freeze it and just put on your head when you’ve got a headache or right before you go to bed! It’s only about $1 at T.J Maxx and serves as one of my favorites from 2015 for whenever I need some relaxing me time.
  4.   Glass Animals Zaba Album- I’ve come across some great music in 2015! The Glass Animals have been around for a few years now and this album is great! If you like electronic, tribal music with a peculiar taste, this is for you. Listen to Gooey if it’s your first time hearing them. You will not regret it!
  5.   Travis Scott- Like rap with a great beat and bass drops? Travis Scott has made some great music this year on his album Rodeo. You may have heard Antidote, as it’s one of his most popular songs and has been on the radio for a while now. If you like Antidote, you’ll LOVE the rest of that album!
  6.   Gray Ombre- Ombres in general have been my thing all year, but the color grey has been my favorite color. Although I have not done this to my hair yet, it is coming soon! I promise I will post before and after pictures!
  7.   Heels, anything with HEELS!- Addictive. That’s all I have to say about that!

What were some of your obsessions? Let me know! I love trying new things!

Dramatic, Festive Eyes Tutorial

So I was going to name this New Year’s festive eye makeup, but I doubt anyone out there is scouring the Inter-webs for how-to’s for New Years two hours before the ball drops. This can be got any festive event 🙂 Enjoy!

So this is what you’ll need:

  • Sephora’s Moonshadow baked palette, or any sparkly dark brown and gold baked eyeshadow.
  • Eyeshadow brush and eyeshadow blender
  • Liquid Eyeliner
  • Black Mascara *note, I did eyeliner and mascara before eyeshadow
  • Sephora’s Gold Jumbo Crayon

First, take the darkest brown color on the palette and apply darkest to the space between your eyebrow and the outter corner of your eye, then very lightly to the whole eyelid like so:

Then, take the goldest, sparkliest color on your palette or if you have the Moonshadow palette, use the color that is one right of the first color.

Apply the gold color from the corner of your eye and blend close to where you applied the brown but not all the way up. Make sure the gold is blended partly with the brown so that the two colors won’t end abruptly — that would look weird.

Because you can never have too much gold eye color, I like to add Sephora’s gold jumbo crayon to the corners of my eyes (It’s long-lasting…hooray!)

Hope you enjoyed my festive makeup tutorial!

A review: Bésame Lipstick Matchsticks

At first, I had mixed feelings about this product. I received it in the mail from Sephora for $6.00 (way overpriced for my liking) and thought the sticks would be a bit bigger. Well, here’s the package. It’s cute, vintage-y.

I opened it up and I was confused
How was I supposed to apply lipstick to my huge lips using the tip of a matchstick with like maybe two drops of lipstick?? I pouted about this for a while, it sat in my makeup bag for quite a while and then I thought about trying it.

Again, I couldn’t get over the size, but I decided I should stop complaining and try the dang thing. As I lined my lips with the tiny, miniscule matchstick (that is actually SMALLER than an actual matchstick!) I thought: It ain’t that bad!

Believe it or not, the color was vibrant! I would use these matchsicks for lining and then use another color to fill the rest of the lip (just because I have bigger lips) Someone with smaller lips could apply the matchstick to their whole lip, but it was not working for me, sadly.

The full version is available on Sephora’s website and it is a fairly new product and I would imagine they would go quickly so if you like what you see, knock yourself out and buy one!

Final words:

  •  3 1/2 out of 5 stars
  • Great, vibrant color
  • Goes on smooth
  • Neat packaging
  • Guess you get what you pay for (regarding the size)

If you’ve tried this product let me know below what you think!

Face Masks: My Must-Haves

Wanna know how I get my face so clear? Read below!

Literally face masks are the best things ever. There are all kinds too. My favorites are the peel-offs eventhough they hurt peeling off! I also like the scruby kinds too.

So I’m splitting this post in two, this one is the “Must Haves” which are the face masks you can buy at any beauty supply store or even supermarkets or grocery stores. The second part is homemade face masks so make sure you check that out too!

Peel-Off Masks

This mask is brilliant! I’ve had this for a really long time so the packaging may look a little different now, but Queen Helene’s Grape Seed Extract Peel Off Masque will always be my favorite peel-off and it’s cheap! The only downside is that peel-off masks hurt. Well, I also have a very low pain tolerance so most people would probably think it’s fine. If you’re like me and you don’t like the feeling of tightness and pulling once the mask dries on, just think how even and bright your skin will look after! And omce it’s off, splash your face with cold water and pat dry, add a little facial lotion and you’re golden! You’ll feel like you have new skin!

The next peel off is a new mask I’ve used for a couple months now and thought it was worth adding to the list.

This Feeling Beautiful Cucumber Peel-Off Mask smells great! It’s so fresh and does the same thing as the Queen Helene mask. There are full sizes of these available, but I barely use these. Once a week is good for these masks because they are really potent. Oh and that reminds me, keep away from eyes! Like do not get too close, it WILL burn, even if it’s not on your eye.

For both of these peel-offs, I’ve had the best results leaving a thin layer on for 15 minutes then peel off (if you don’t peel off and wash off instead, the dry/dead skin will not get pulled off and that’s the whole point!). After you peeled it all off, splash your face with COLD water and make sure all the mask is removed. Then moisturize.

Clog Dissolving Milk
This mask is great when you’re in a hurry and need instant skin cleansing and clearness. Bliss’s Clog Dissolving Cleansing Milk has fast working exfoliating enzymes that work in just 5 minutes! That means you apply it, maybe brush your hair, pick an outfit and in no time, your skin looks great! With me, smell always matters and well, this mask smells great! There aren’t negatives except that this mask is pretty potent as well. Keep away from your eyes, don’t even risk getting close to them!
Pore Refining Sheet Masks
You can never go wrong with sheet masks! If you’re looing for moisture and softness, you’ll want a sheet mask. I really like this one because it helps in so many areas. The serum in the mask gives a gentle clean, removing makup or dirt you can’t see, smoothes and moisturizes. I have really bad dry skin, especially in the winter so you’ll see me in these a lot this time of year. Pretty close to every day!

So that’s my skin mask spiel.

Any questions, ideas, comments — don’t hesitate to contact me!

Get the Pocahontas look — It’s Easy!

Pocahontas Look

Alright, it’s seldom I ever go without eyeliner unless I’m doing this look. It’s natural and very golden, that’s why it’s called the Pocahontas look eventhough I don’t look like her exactly (it just reminds me of her). This look is great for tanner skin tones, but if you are not very tan, you can do this as well!

Hydrate and Prime
You’re going to want to start out using some sort of facial lotion, make sure it is for the face NOT the body! The product above is what you’re going to use as a primer! I am in love with Roc products and this is one of my favorites. A little goes a long way and it makes your skin soft and ready for foundation.

Apply Correct Shade of Foundation

Any liquid foundation will work, but I prefer Nars’ Medium 4 Barcelona. Use a small amount, about two pumps. Apply all over your face, dot close up to your eyes, high cheeks, bridge of nose, and forehead. Use a kabuki brush and spread evenly.

Now, we need to highlight. My favorite highlighter is Sephora’s Ultra Light drops. A little goes a long, long way with these! Spread half a drop under each eye with a concealing brush out to the top of your cheeks. All this does is make your undereyes look brighter and your cheeks will have a bright, glowy look.

Next, we need to seal the liquid with powder. For this look, you’ll need powder foundation to bring more color out. Do not use translucent powder for this look, it will cancel out the brightness. I like to use Kat Von D’s Lock-It Tattoo powder foundation in Medium 56. Use the same kabuki brush from before and apply by patting, not rubbing. Careful when doing this, you do not want a cakey look.

Bronzing Time!

Bronzing is my favorite type of makeup! It contours your face however you want and makes my face look thinner. For this look, we really want to bring out strong facial features. We want a high cheekbone and a sharp bone structure around your chin. Urban Decay’s Naked Flushed palette has a bronzer, a highlighter and a blush. To apply the bronzer, grab a slanted brush. This is kind of silly, but make a fish face! Like a duck face, but act like you ate something sour! The lines that appear on your cheeks from the corners of your mouth up to the side of your face is where you should apply bronzer. Do not be afraid to add too much bronzer because you can always blend it in with a kabuki brush.

Mascara!

Buxom’s Full and Fabulous Mascara is perfect for this look, but you can also use anything that makes your eyelashes look long and full!

Cream Eyeshadow

Here is where you can get creative. Cream eyeshadows that are matte and neutral are all great for the Pocahontas look. i used a matte cream brown eyeshadow by Elle. Brown eyes are better off doing light browns to medium dark brown, blue and green eyes can do a light gold. For my look, I kept my eyeshadow on my eyelid, but pulling the color out a little more is fine too!

Lips!

Kat Von D’s Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lolita dries into a beautiful matte color. Before you apply this color, make sure you hydrate your lips. I like to use mint EOS balls before I apply any matte colored lipstick because they tend to dry out my lips. I love this lipstick so much, it lasts all day and doesn’t go anywhere when you eat or drink. Of course, you can use any matte lipstick with a slight pinkish brown, but this lipstick is a must have!

So there you have it! My natural look secret and that I call my natural look Pocahontas.

Comment pictures if you try it! I’m curious to see if anyone else loves it too.
